LOCKOUT BOX

Lockout box is a storage device that can be used to obtain keys to effectively lock large devices. Each locking point on the device is secured with a padlock.

For group lockout situations, the use of a lockbox can save time and money, and may even be a safer alternative to individual lockouts. Typically the overseeing supervisor will secure unique safety lock to each energy isolation point needing to be locked out. Then places the operating keys into the lockbox. Each authorized worker then secures their personal safety lock to the lock box. After each worker has completed their maintenance activities, they can safely remove their lock. The supervisor is only able to unlock the energy isolation point. When the last worker has completed his work, and removed his personal lock from the lockbox, this ensure that all workers are out of harm’s way, before initiating equipment re-energization and start-up.

A group lockout is defined as a lockout that occurs when more than one employee will be performing maintenance on a single piece of equipment simultaneously. Similar to a personal lockout, there should be one authorized employee that is in charge of the entire group lockout. Also, OSHA requires that each employee must affix his/her own personal lock on each group lockout device or group lockbox.
