Cable lockouts are used to secure and lock out equipment that has multiple access points or moving parts, such as valves, switches, or electrical panels. Here’s how you can use a cable lockout:
Identify the equipment that needs to be locked out and ensure that it is properly shut down and de-energized.
Choose a suitable cable lockout device that fits the specific requirements of the equipment. The cable should be strong and durable enough to withstand tampering or unauthorized access.
Thread the cable through the lockout points on the equipment, ensuring that all energy sources are effectively isolated.
Once the cable is in place, secure it with a padlock to prevent removal or tampering.
Clearly label the cable lockout with a tag that includes information about the lockout, such as the reason for the lockout, the name of the person who installed it, and the date and time of installation.
Once the work on the equipment is completed and it is safe to remove the lockout, the authorized personnel can unlock the padlock and remove the cable lockout.
It’s important to follow proper lockout/tagout procedures and ensure that only authorized personnel have access to the equipment and the ability to remove the lockout. This helps to prevent accidents, injuries, and unauthorized operation of machinery.
